PepsiCo Inc., Purchase, NY, has completed the acquisition of approximately 66 percent of the outstanding shares of Wimm-Bill-Dann Foods OJSC, Russia’s leading branded food-and-beverage company, for approximately $3.8 billion. The acquisition increases PepsiCo’s total ownership of Wimm-Bill-Dann’s ordinary shares to approximately 77 percent and makes PepsiCo the largest food-and-beverage business in Russia. It also strengthens the company’s position in the Eastern European and Central Asian markets.
A significant portion of electricity used by White Rose Inc.’s distribution warehouse in Carteret, NJ, will be powered by a 5 megawatt, photovoltaic (PV) solar electricity generating system, to be installed by Solar Power Inc. White Rose expects to replace about 6 million kilowatt-hours per year of grid-based energy with the clean, renewable energy generated on the roof of its warehouse.
C.R. England, Salt Lake City, is using an enhanced intermodal transportation system, TempStack container-on-flatcar technology (COFC), which combines the benefits of rail transportation with the convenience of localized trailer delivery. The use of the intermodal network—which uses shipping via rail instead of over-the-road—saved the company and its customers more than 3.5 million gallons of fuel in 2009. The company also expects to lower fuel costs by 40 percent compared with traditional operating models by selecting more energy-efficient systems with superior control functions.
Nestle USA Glendale, CA, and Nestle Water’s North America, Stamford, CT, have signed a multi-year contract to ship their products on pallets from CHEP Americas, Orlando. Nestle continues to move products from its baking, beverage, Buitoni, confections and snacks, Dreyer’s and waters divisions to supermarkets, distributors and wholesale clubs across the U.S. on CHEP pallets.
Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh, has signed an agreement with Chicago-based Galleria to deploy the solution provider’s Behavioral Cluster Planning solution, a behavioral-based clustering solution that provides consumer insight and analysis. The solution will cluster Giant Eagle’s stores based on product and category performance to help the retailer gain more insight to its shoppers’ needs to accurately meet customer demand
Intermec Inc., Everett, WA, has entered into a definitive agreement under which it will acquire Vocollect Inc. Vocollect is privately held by Riverside Partners, a Boston-based private equity firm and private investors. Both companies’ Boards of Directors have approved the $190 million all-cash offer. Vocollect will broaden Intermec’s applications and solution offerings in the warehouse workflow and help to establish a leading position in software-oriented solutions.
Marlborough, MA-based Ken’s Foods is shipping its retail products throughout the U.S. on all-plastic pallets with embedded radio frequency identification (RFID) tags from Intelligent Global Pooling Systems (iGPS Co. LLC), headquartered in Orlando, FL. Ken’s Foods produces and packages over 400 varieties of dressings and sauces, including Ken’s Steakhouse Salad Dressings.
Dallas-based Greatwide Logistics Services has acquired the contracts, personnel and equipment of Overton Transportation, a subsidiary of Sysco Corp. The business will be integrated under the Greatwide Freight brand. Overton currently has 70 tractors, 100 trailers and 133 employees located in La Vergne, TN. Through the use of team drivers Greatwide will operate expedited temperature-controlled service from coast to coast, allowing for fast transit of perishable goods from the grower to wholesale and retail distribution points.
RedPrairie Corp., Milwaukee, has finalized the acquisition of SofTechnics, a provider of integrated retail enterprise solutions. SofTechnics’ software portfolio adds mobility-enabled Store Inventory and Price Management, Intelligent Store Ordering, Direct-Store Delivery and Master Data Management to RedPrairie’s solution set. The acquisition further strengthens RedPrairie’s Retail Platform with proven functionality that will benefit customers with reduced operating costs from advanced store inventory and labor management planning.
