Food Companies Ramp Up Food Origin Disclosure

Companies are rushing to meet consumers’ increasing demand to know more about what’s in their food, where it came from, and how it was produced, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The North American spat pitting Canada and Mexico against the U.S. over meat labels has sown confusion among producers and shippers in all three countries, with a trade war potentially just weeks away, according to Reuters.

Wegmans Recalls Chicken Products That Missed Inspections

The recalled products were shipped to distribution and retail locations in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

The chicken items were produced on Jan. 3, 2016. The following products are subject to recall: Approximately 1-pound, vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Italian Flavored Chicken Breast Cutlet” with a use-by date of 1/24/2016; Approximately 1-pound, vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Brown Sugar Barbecue Seasoned Chicken Breast Cutlet” with a use-by date of 1/15/2016; 3-pound, vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Garlic & Fennel Whole Chicken Roaster” with a use-by date of 1/13/2016; and 1-pound, vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wokery Sherry Chicken 27482” with use-by date of 1/13/2016.

Food Giants Invest In SmartLabel Initiative

The SmartLabel initiative, announced Wednesday by the Grocery Manufacturers Association, so far includes more than 30 companies, including General Mills Inc., Hershey Co., and PepsiCo Inc.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association estimated that by the end of 2017, companies will disclose information on GMOs for some 20,000 products through the SmartLabel technology.
