The new grouping, to be called the Ocean Alliance, also will include Hong Kong’s Orient Overseas Container Line and Taipei-based Evergreen Marine.

The Ocean Alliance eventually will make room for Singapore’s Neptune Orient Lines Ltd., which agreed to be bought in December by CMA CGM.

Port Authority Of New York And New Jersey Bids For No. 1 Spot

The Port Authority aims for the New York area to surpass the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Calif., to become the busiest U.S. gateway for imports and exports.

The new Air Canada Cargo flights will provide 52 tons of net cargo capacity and are scheduled to begin June 9, 2016, subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals.

Ports To Invest $154.8 Billion In Infrastructure Improvements Over 5 Years

The combined $155 billion, 5-year investment that U.S. ports and their private sector partners are planning represents a more than three-fold increase over the combined $46 billion figure obtained from the same survey five years ago.

Economist John C. Martin, Ph.D., president of Lancaster, Pa.-based Martin Associates, said U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis formulas show that investing nearly $155 billion in capital projects at U.S. ports would create about 1.6 million direct, indirect and induced domestic jobs, accounting for approximately 3.3 billion person-hours of work over the period of the investment.

CMA CGM Petitions EU To Acquire Neptune Orient Lines

The CMA offer resulted in the EU competition authority extending the deadline for its decision on CMA CGM's NOL takeover to April 29 from April 15 to examine the package, according to the Commission website.

CMA CGM, which ranks behind No. 1 Maersk Line and Swiss peer MSC in global shipping, submitted the concessions recently, a filing on the European Commission website showed. CMA is expected to withdraw NOL from competing shipping alliances to allay concerns, people familiar with the matter said.

BNSF Considers Scrapping Intermodal Facility Near California Ports Due To Judge’s Ruling

After reviewing California Superior Court Judge Barry Goode's ruling, BNSF officials are "troubled by what the decision represents and uncertain whether moving forward with the project is feasible at this time," said BNSF in a press release.

The judge's ruling was in response to lawsuits filed against the project over concerns that it would have a harmful impact on the environment.
