Defenders of the use of genetically modified organisms won a small battle last week, when the GMO Panel of the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) decided the documentation submitted by Italy in support of its request to ban MON 810 from Monsanto wasn't convincing enough.
In the EFSA's summary it concluded that there is no specific scientific evidence, in terms of risk to human and animal health or the environment, that would support the notification of an emergency measure and that would invalidate its previous risk assessments of maize MON 810.
