As part of Walmart's initiative to open more local fulfillment centers, the company plans on opening a 1 million-square-foot location in Salt Lake City, Utah. The fulfillment location will push Walmart's continual movement into e-commerce and is likely to create 450 full-time jobs and will open in the summer of next year. This location will be a stark difference to a distribution center, which is focused on bulk for bricks-and-mortar retail, but instead focus on packaging and shipping items directly to consumers.

  • The facility is part of a broader initiative to add more capacity into Walmart’s supply chain as the retailer prepares for growth. In Q3 of FY22, Walmart U.S. eCommerce sales grew 8% for the quarter and 87% over the past two years.
  • Walmart operates 3 distribution centers, 59 retail stores and employs 20,000+ associates in the state of Utah. In FYE 21, stores, clubs and the Walmart Foundation gave $19.4 million in cash and in-kind donations to local Utah organizations.

“Walmart is excited to welcome our first fulfillment center in Salt Lake City to support our growing ecommerce fulfillment network,” said Steve Miller, senior vice president of Supply Chain Operations at Walmart U.S. “This new facility is the latest of example of Walmart’s commitment to offering customers fast shipping on items they need every day, and we look forward to further delivering on that promise with the development of this new, state-of-the-art facility.”
