Valentine's Day's staple candy won't be on shelves this year.

Conversation heart candy won't be available this season after its original producer, Necco, went out of business in 2018. The candy is the most popular candy of the Valentine's season, despite people believing that it's chocolate, according to Candystore.com. However, the candy hearts weren't able to keep Necco in business.

CNBC reports that Ronald Hill Investments purchased Necco in an auction, but sold its wafer brand and Sweethearts to Spangler Candy Company in September. Unfortunately, with the limited time, the company was unable to produce conversation hearts in time for Valentine's Day.

"There are a lot of manufacturing challenges and unanswered questions at this point, and we want to make sure these brands meet consumer expectations when they re-enter the market," Spangler Chairman and CEO Kirk Vashaw said in a statement announcing the acquisition.

Spangler aims to have conversation hearts out next year.
