For the first time in 17 years, Japanese beef imports will be allowed in Australia. There was a previous ban on the imports after an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease) was found in Japan.
The country has been trying to get the ban lifted since 2004. Japanese exports are expected to surge as Australians reportedly consume 20.9kg of beef per personal annually.
Under the new agreement, exports to Australia must be processed at facilities authorized by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the Asian Review reports.
