According to an interview with Isobel Coleman, senior fellow and director of the civil society, markets, and democracy initiative, approximately 80 percent of U.S. corn crops and more than 11 percent of soybean crops have been affected by the drought, which has prompted a rise in global food prices.
“When you see a crop failure of the magnitude you have seen this summer, it flows through the whole food chain,” says Coleman, who proposes the U.S. an ethanol mandate in order to build a “more resilience into the global food system.”
