University of Massachusetts Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy signed the “Real Food Challenge” as part of the campus Sustainability Day, becoming the largest institution to date to commit to the movement that aims to have schools and universities across the country serve 20 percent local, sustainable or fair-trade food by 2020.
Signing the Real Food Challenge, a nationwide campaign to shift $1 billion of existing university food budgets away from industrial farms and towards local and humane food sources, was just one of the many features of the third-annual event, which included a job "forum" with UMass alumni working in green jobs and a local food tasting booths and displays.
