Spot-market load availability fell 5.6 percent during the week ending Feb. 6, with the number of van and refrigerated loads dropping 17 percent and 12 percent, respectively, according to DAT Solutions, which operates the DAT network of load boards.

The U.S. average retail pump price for gasoline also declined this week by 3.4 cents to $1.822 per gallon, which is 24.6 cents cheaper compared to the same week in 2015.

Load-to-truck ratios represent the number of loads posted for every truck available on DAT load boards. The load-to-truck ratio is a sensitive, real-time indicator of the balance between spot market demand and capacity. Changes in the ratio often signal impending changes in rates.

Spot Truckload Van, Reefer Rates Dip In Recent Week
Compared to October, the availability of van freight declined a modest 2.9 percent, flatbed volume lost 39 percent, and refrigerated (reefer) volume increased 9.1 percent. Spot market rates edged up 0.7 percent for vans and 0.6 percent for reefers, month over month. Flatbed rates declined 4.0 percent, however, due to seasonal pressure.
Spot Freight Volume Drops 15% In November
The number of available reefer loads increased 6.4 percent while truck capacity rose just 1.9 percent, which sent the load-to-truck ratio up 4.4 percent to 4.1 loads per truck.
