Deal Reached to Fix Tax Break for Farmers

Congressional committees and farm groups have changed language to fix a provision in the federal tax overhaul that gave an unintended tax advantage to farmers who sell their crops to cooperatives instead of other buyers.

Congressional committees and farm groups have changed language to fix a provision in the federal tax overhaul that gave an unintended tax advantage to farmers who sell their crops to cooperatives instead of other buyers. Both sides hope to include it in the spending bill. 

The language is the product of works worth of negotiations among committee leaders and staffers. If congress approves the changes, the fix would be retroactive to Jan. 1.

The deal is meant to keep the playing field between co-ops and other crop buyers level.
