Bourbon distillers are fine-tuning their logistics because barrel production is not keeping up with the surging bourbon demand, according to The Wall Street Journal. Bourbon production surged to record levels from 2010 to 2013, at a growth rate of 50 percent. Kentucky distillers filled 1.2 million barrels in 2013 alone, and that wasn’t easy because barrel producers have been struggling to keep up since the lumber industry contracted so deeply in the wake of that housing collapse. Bigger, established distillers are in better shape, and some of them are working with barrel-makers to fine-tune their logistics.
