Ocean Alliance to Deploy Largest Ships to Ever Visit U.S. Ports

The alliance said it initially plans deploy up to 175 container ships with capacities ranging from 4,200 TEUs to up to 18,000 TEUs on its trans-Pacific network with the strongest East and Gulf coast port focus seen in years.

The Ocean Alliance eventually will make room for Singapore’s Neptune Orient Lines Ltd., which agreed to be bought in December by CMA CGM.

Hapag-Lloyd Finalizes Merger with United Arab Shipping Company

The fleet of the combined company will consist of 237 ships – including UASC´s six recently received 18,800 TEU ships, known for their superior eco-efficiency credentials, as well as 11 newly built 15,000 TEU ships.

The company will be the key player in the new “THE Alliance” – consisting of Hanjin, Hapag-Lloyd, K-Line, Mitsui O.S.K Lines, Nippon Yusen Kaisha and Yang Ming.

Federal Grants to Upgrade Six U.S. Ports; Coos Bay, Oregon gets $11 M For Railway

Federal funding from the Nationally Significant Freight and Highway Projects (FASTLANE) program offers "broad, multi-year eligibilities for freight infrastructure, including intermodal projects."

At the Port of Coos Bay, Ore., the state's largest coastal deep draft port, officials have received an $11 million grant to help repair all nine aging rail tunnels linking the facility with inland transportation networks.

Expanded Panama Canal Smashes Toll Record

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines-operated MOL Benefactor paid a $829,468 toll for the previously too big containership to use the Panama Canal to pass through, breaking the $575,545 toll paid by COSCO Shipping Panama for its inaugural transit of the expanded locks.

The 10,000 TEU MOL Benefactor was actually the first neopanamax containership to use the new locks since commercial operations began June 27, so the transit offers a glimpse of what is likely to come in terms of toll revenue.

Global Shippers Forum: Carriers And Service Providers Exploit VGM Rules

The GSF is reporting some carriers and other service providers are exploiting the new verified gross mass (VGM) weighing rules by imposing exorbitant and unjustified charges for questionable and unspecified “administration fees” and other “services.”

Chris Welsh, GSF Secretary-General, said: “Shippers worldwide support the safety goals of the container weighing requirements and are committed to fulfilling their regulatory requirements, but this should not be used by supply chain partners as an excuse to impose unjustified fees.'

The expansion of the Panama Canal means cargo containers from Asia now can take a direct, all-water route to East Coast and southern ports, avoiding the need to transfer goods from L.A./Long Beach to distant U.S. markets.
