Imports Bring Port Of New York And New Jersey Busiest August Ever

Nearly 330,000 containers passed through terminals overseen by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a 7.9 percent gain from a year earlier.

During the year, the port handled 6,371,720 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) (or 3,664,013 cargo containers), an increase of 10.4 percent over 2014 when the previous annual record was established.

Ohio River Traffic Jam Delays Grain Shipments

The delays started nearly a month ago after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers partially closed a lock outside Brookport, Ill. that allows vessels to navigate a portion of the Ohio River near where it feeds into the Mississippi River.

The section of river that includes the lock is among the busiest for transporting commodities within the U.S., with nearly 100 million tons of freight—mostly corn, soybeans and other grains but also some coal and other resources—passing through the portion of river that includes the lock each year.
