FDA Cracks Down On Peanut Butter Plant

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is suspending business at Sunland Inc., a New Mexico-based peanut butter plant that had various food safety violations over several years.

FDA officials found salmonella in numerous locations in Sunland’s processing plant after 41 people in 20 states, most of them children, were sickened by peanut butter manufactured at the Portales, N.M.

According to Jimmie Shearer, president and CEO of Sunland, Sunland will continue to cooperate openly with FDA to address matters related to the recent recall of its products and the inspection of its manufacturing facilities.
