U.S. Senators Seek to Review Marfrig's National Beef Deal

U.S. senators have asked a national security panel to review Marfrig Global Foods SA's $969 million acquisition of National Beef Packing Co. to see if it threatens to safety of the U.S. food supply.

U.S. senators have asked a national security panel to review Marfrig Global Foods SA's $969 million acquisition of National Beef Packing Co. to see if it threatens to safety of the U.S. food supply.

The farm state legislators said in a letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin that they were concerned Marfrig was seeking to buy National Beef after the U.S. banned imports of fresh Brazilian beef over safety concerns last year. Marfrig is based in Brazil.

Senators Charles Grassley, Joni Ernst, Debbie Stabenow and Sherrod Brown have requested that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States review the deal.

National Beef is the United States' fourth-largest beef processor, and if they deal goes through, it would make it the world's second largest beef processor.
