The National School Lunch Program’s strict food safety standard keeps harmful bacteria out of school lunches. Companies that want to sell ground beef to the National School Lunch Program must meet a zero tolerance policy for Salmonella and E. coli bacteria. Once registering for contracts, additional testing will be carried out for every 10,000 pounds of shipment.

Since implementing the zero tolerance police to the National School Lunch Program, USDA Agricultural Marketing Services took further action into testing for food safety.
