The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will conduct the first test of an electric vehicle to move cargo containers in hopes to eventually replace gas-powered fleets with something more eco-friendly.

According to the Miami Herald, the pilot program is part of a broader effort to reduce greenhouse gases at ports. The vehicles will be used to lift 30-ton cargo containers and load them onto trucks for transport. The electric carriers will be tested later this year at the Maher Terminals and will be assessed for lifting capacity, down time for maintenance and environmental benefits.

The Miami Herald reports that if the pilot is success, up to 30 of older gas-powered vehicles could be replaced annually by the electric vehicles.
