Technology is getting implemented in almost every single industry, and fast food restaurants are no exception.

Restaurant chains are quickly turning toward automation to help take orders and free up time for workers to provide better customer service.

McDonald's is taking it one step further, though. Earlier this year the company acquired tech company Dynamic Yield to begin testing automation and personalization at its drive-thrus.

In addition, the company is testing deep-frying robots that cook chicken, fish and fries at a Chicago suburb. The technology will also include automated beverage equipment that are expected to improve customer wait times, which have increased in the last few years. McDonald's expects to roll out this technology to additional locations later this summer.

Despite chains increasingly adding technology to their operations, a Technomic survey found that about one-third of restaurants have fallen behind the current pace of technology.
