Hy-Vee Partners with FishWise on Sustainable Seafood Policy

Grocery store chain has partnered with non-profit FishWise to outline a Responsible Sourcing Commitment for seafood.

This week the Hy-Vee grocery store chain pledged that by the end of 2015 their stores will only source seafood that is designated green or yellow by the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program, certified by an equivalent system, or from fisheries with credible, time-bound improvement processes.

“It is Hy-Vee’s mission to do business in a manner that promotes the well-being of our customers, employees, communities, and the global environment,” Nate Stewart, Hy-Vee’s VP of perishables, said in a press release. “We aim to be a destination for sustainable seafood, where customers can be confident that they are supporting the health of their families and that of the oceans by purchasing seafood sold at Hy-Vee.”

Hy-Vee plans to inform customers of these changes in stores, on its website, in its quarterly magazine and via signs in seafood cases that call out “Responsible Choice” items. One update Hy-Vee has already made was switching from Russian king crab to Alaskan king crab.
