Port Authority Of New York And New Jersey Bids For No. 1 Spot

The Port Authority aims for the New York area to surpass the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Calif., to become the busiest U.S. gateway for imports and exports.

With about 60,000 containers passing through the port’s terminals each week, even small delays can cost retailers, manufacturers and other importers thousands of dollars.

Air Canada And Cargojet Airways To Launch Dedicated Freighter Service To Latin America And Europe

The new Air Canada Cargo flights will provide 52 tons of net cargo capacity and are scheduled to begin June 9, 2016, subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals.

Under the arrangement, Air Canada Cargo also plans to introduce dedicated freighter service to Europe from Toronto in the second half of 2016.

Ports To Invest $154.8 Billion In Infrastructure Improvements Over 5 Years

The combined $155 billion, 5-year investment that U.S. ports and their private sector partners are planning represents a more than three-fold increase over the combined $46 billion figure obtained from the same survey five years ago.

Economist John C. Martin, Ph.D., president of Lancaster, Pa.-based Martin Associates, said U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis formulas show that investing nearly $155 billion in capital projects at U.S. ports would create about 1.6 million direct, indirect and induced domestic jobs, accounting for approximately 3.3 billion person-hours of work over the period of the investment.
