California Police Crack Down On Food Delivery Bikes

The traffic police have fined around 47 bikes who deliver pizza and food across the city.

The traffic police in California have started a crackdown on two-wheelers carrying out food deliveries, which come under the category of modified bikes.

This year (until May), the traffic police have fined around 47 bikes who deliver pizza and food across the city. Bike riders have shelled out more than 11,000 in fines, and repeat offenders also had their licenses suspended.

A traffic police officer said that any bike that is tampered with or has something added to it that is not provided originally by the manufacturer comes under this category. The bikes used by restaurants and pizza delivery joints are modified bikes, as they have hot cases installed.

"This is an ongoing drive and we will continue with the crackdown," said senior police inspector (prosecution), Mote Patil, traffic police.

Although the traffic police have been fining riders of modified bikes for the past one year, it is only this year that delivery bikes of food joints have come under their scanner. However, hoteliers said that they had no choice but to attach hot cases onto the bikes as customers want the delivered food to be hot.

"The crackdown has affected our business. We are not against the law, but when the delivery does not reach on time, we are answerable to the customer," said an employee of a pizza joint in Santa Cruz, CA.
