Vermont Lawmaker Looking To Expand Deposit Law to Increase Universal Recycling

Montpelier, VT: A Vermont lawmaker wants to expand the state's bottle-deposit law so it includes all non-dairy containers.

Republican Sen. Joseph Benning tells the Burlington Free Press that a lot of what he sees along the roadsides during his three-mile walks can't be returned for deposit. And Benning, of Caledonia, is getting somewhere with his bill.

Two other members of the five-person Senate Natural Resources Committee came out in support of his proposal, which would expand a bill that would put the state on a course toward universal recycling.

Benning's proposal would include all beverage containers except dairy and dairy alternatives such as soy milk.

The bottle deposit expansion would take effect July 1, 2013. Benning's bill goes to the Senate this week.
