Contract negotiations between longshore union workers on the U.S. West Coast and their employers, represented by the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), remain “far apart,” said a spokesman for the PMA.
The current contract expired nearly six months ago. Since then, rising cargo volumes are contributing to bottlenecks at key port gateways, however the PMA is charging the longshoremen with deliberately working slower due to the stalemate in contract talks.
Holiday imports of consumer goods are affected by the slowdown as are exports of agricultural goods like apples, potatoes and other produce.
