Port of Charleston to Build $40 Million Rail Facility in Dillon

South Carolina Ports Authority

The South Carolina Ports Authority hopes to open the $40 million cargo hub including a container storage area, a chassis yard, operations and maintenance facilities and cranes to transfer cargo between trains and trucks served by railroad operator CSX.

The inland port in Dillon will start out much smaller - 35,000 cargo boxes in its first year - but is expected to handle 220,000 containers within 20 years.

Florida East Coast Railway is For Sale

Florida East Coast Railway (FECR)

Asset manager Fortress Investment Group LLC is reported to be exploring a possible sale of Florida East Coast Railway Corp.

The holding company of Florida East Coast Railway -- Florida East Coast Industries Inc. -- was taken private in 2007 by funds managed by Fortress in a transaction valued at about $3.5 billion. The fund later spun off the railway operations into a separate company, leaving real estate, logistics and telecommunications assets under the FECI umbrella.

Watco Supply Chain Services Acquires BCM Logistics

BCM Logistics provides door to door intermodal, operating as an Intermodal Marketing Company (IMC), contracting direct with the Class I Railroads and the majority of the ocean carriers for repositioning of containers in domestic service.

BNSF Launches Faster Intermodal Service Between Pacific Northwest and Texas

This new service option, the first of other new routes that will be announced and rolled out over the next year, comes just in time for the fall fruit harvest in the Pacific Northwest and will help businesses get their products to market more efficiently.

Shippers who move commodities and a wide range of consumer goods between Portland, Ore., or Seattle, Wash. and Dallas/Fort Worth (AllianceTexas) will now be able to reduce their transit times by up to two days when compared to rail transit time options currently in the marketplace.

Central Texas & Colorado River Railway Starts Operations

Central Texas & Colorado River Railway (CTXR) operates 68 miles of track running due west from Lometa, Texas, where it interchanges with BNSF, to Brady, Texas.

CTXR current traffic includes grain, feed, building products, aggregates, and “Brady Brown” frac sand. Given OmniTRAX’s experience and expertise in handling a more diverse and specialized commodity mix across its portfolio, the CTXR is ready to diversify and reinforce its traffic handling capabilities.

Feds Drop Proposal to Give Freight Trains Priority Over Amtrak

The surface transportation board ultimately concluded Thursday that current law does say that passenger trains are to be given preference over freight trains on shared tracks.

Amtrak argued that if the policy change had been implemented, long-distance and commuter trains would have seen a substantial increase in delays, since nearly 97 percent of the passenger railroad's route miles operate on host railroad tracks that are not owned by Amtrak. Freight rail companies, however, said the effort would have allowed railways to determine the priority of trains on a case-by-case basis.

Regulators Seek Alternatives to Proposed Great Lakes Railroad

The Surface Transportation Board’s Office of Environmental Analysis instructed the company in a July 5 letter to submit alternative alignments — or explain why there aren’t any — along its 278-mile route from LaPorte to Milton, Wis.

Rail Picks Up Steam

Rail and intermodal are supporting the supply chain with infrastructure investments and efficiency improvements.

BNSF No. 6674 leads a double-stacked intermodal container train through mountains in the Scenic Subdivision in Washington state. Each double-stack intermodal train can take 280 trucks off the highways, resulting in lower emissions and fuel consumption. A BNSF train can haul one ton of freight 500 miles on one gallon of diesel fuel.
