Walmart is now asking its suppliers to put food on the blockchain, Bloomberg reports. The new technology has been said to help reduce waste, better manage contamination cases and improve transparency.

For the last two years, the company has been running tests with International Business Machine Corp.'s blockchain platform. Walmart is now ready to use the technology on its grocery business, according to Frank Yiannas, the retailer's vice president of food safety and health. Yiannas spoke Monday at the MIT Technology Review's Business of Blockchain conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
