Whole Foods To Partner With Square For In-Store Mobile Payments

Trial at seven stores customers can use their mobile phones to pay with Square Wallet, which also allows users to look up items and prices, find discounts and track orders.

Whole Foods Market announced a partnership with Square earlier this week that will allow in-store checkouts at venues like sandwich counters, juice and coffee bars, pizzerias and beer and wine bars in select stores. According to this Supermarket News article, seven stores in Austin, New York City, Florida and the San Francisco Bay Area will test using Square Stand devices to speed transactions at these in-store locations.

“Together with Square, we’ll deliver options to expedite checkouts, and we look forward to developing new concepts to further simplify and improve grocery shopping,” Walter Robb, co-CEO of Whole Foods, said in a press release. “Square’s forward-thinking vision and technology makes them an ideal partner to create a convenient, responsive experience for our customers.”

Whole Foods has already announced that designated locations would be used as “lab stores” to test further customer service initiatives, leaving one to guess that if it is successful it would be rolled out to more Whole Foods outlets.
