US-Panama Trade Agreement Comes Into Fruition

A free-trade agreement between the United States and Panama recently went into force at the end of October, which will most likely boost US exports of agriculture goods.

“It is a wonderful capstone on what has been one of the most historic and strongest strategic partnerships, certainly in the Western Hemisphere,” said US Trade Representative Ron Kirk.

About 10 percent of US imports and exports pass through the Panama Canal, and that percentage could rise as Panama completes a $5.3 billion canal expansion project.
