Food Distributors Help With Hurricane Recovery

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, grocery chains are assessing damage, restocking food and working to prevent spoilage.

Sysco Corp. is in touch with local Federal Emergency Management Agencies and American Red Cross units to help get equipment where needed.

Charley Wilson, a spokesman for Sysco, said the food distributor is using backup generators to power its Metro New York distribution center, which is in New Jersey, and deliveries to island areas around Boston will be delayed until the storm tide subsides, while its Long Island center is in “great shape.”

“We are preparing to begin distribution as soon as roads clear, and we get the ‘OK’ from public-safety officials,” Mr. Wilson said.
