Beijing: John Leahy, chief operating officer at Airbus said that the company fully supports China's stand against the European Union's plan to tax international airlines under its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).
Speaking at the 68th annual conference of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), he said that Airbus shares China's viewpoint on the issue and believes that EU's move is inappropriate even though the ETS was formulated to lower carbon emissions.
EU's movement will not be accepted by other countries and it must be rectified, said Leahy.
Furthermore, he said that a worldwide solution under the International Civil Aviation Organization's framework should be designed.
The IATA has asked the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations agency, to finalize a global solution to lower carbon emissions in the aviation industry, said Tony Tyler, chief executive and director-general of IATA.
The EU started taxing airlines that use EU airports for carbon emissions from January 1 and the first payment is due on April 30, 2013.
