Mumbai: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) asked for a comprehensive global solution on aviation emissions to be negotiated through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
IATA's director general and CEO Tony Tyler said that the path to achieve the emission targets would be laid by a good infrastructure, technology and positive market-based measures and a global solution and agreement should happen through ICAO.
The global air transport industry is committed to three sequential goals to manage its 2 percent share of global man-made carbon emissions.
These are: To improve fuel efficiency 1.5 percent annually to 2020, to cap net emissions from 2020 with carbon-neutral growth, to cut net emissions in half by 2050 compared with 2005 level. Most countries, including India, have started monitoring fuel emissions from aircraft and aircraft related activities. All airlines are required to send their fuel consumption data on an annual basis. The same is required of the airport operators.
"India is also taking steps to monitor and then plug emissions. However, Indian and some other countries are opposed to the carbon tax proposed by the European Union. This is why a more acceptable and comprehensive approach needs to be adopted so that all countries can work together to reduce emissions," a DGCA official said.
