News and Trends From Across the Food Supply Chain

"We recognize sleep apnea as a problem that we can address in a proactive manner," says Sandra Carson, assistant vice president of safety and crisis management for SYSCO, Houston. "From what we have seen, Precision Pulmonary's program is designed to quickly and effectively diagnose and treat our employees and we are looking forward to getting started."

SYSCO will begin using the online screening tool with a select number of drivers in the fall. Pending the results from the initial testing, additional areas of the company will begin testing as well.

Dole Food Reducing CO2 In Supply Chains

Dole Food Co. Inc. and its operating subsidiary in Costa Rica have signed an agreement with the National Forestry Financing Fund and the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica to establish a carbon neutral product supply chain for bananas and pineapples.

The carbon neutral supply chain will extend from production in Costa Rica to the markets in North America and Europe.

Dole says the carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted to produce, pack, transport and distribute their fruit will be offset by practices which increase the capture of CO2 in order to achieve a neutral carbon balance. These practices will entail new, more efficient transportation methods, changes to agricultural processes to reduce CO2 emissions and partnering with local farmers to implement preservation and reforestation programs.

"The environment is a concern for all of us. Companies, consumers, governments and non-governmental organizations should endeavor to promote and adopt new production and distribution methods and consumption behavior in order to reverse harmful trends to the environment," says David A. DeLorenzo, president and chief executive officer of Dole Food Co. Inc., Westlake Village, CA.

"As the world's largest producer and distributor of fruits and vegetables, Dole is determined to take the lead in its sector and the agreement is a good starting point." he notes.
