The U.S. trucking industry in 2006 hauled more goods than ever before in a single year, according to the American Trucking Association, Arlington, VA. ATA's American Trucking Trends 2007-2008 reports that the trucking industry hauled 69 percent of the total volume of freight transported in the U.S. This equates to an all-time high carrying load of 10.7 billion tons, and $645.6 billion in revenue, representing 83.8 percent of the nation's freight bill.

Boise, ID, will become the primary location for SuperValu Inc. to process data from its stores and distribution centers. Supervalu has two data centers-one in Boise and the other in Eden Prairie, MN. The Eden Prairie location will be used for testing and development.

The Food and Drug Administration blocked imports of 11 types of questionable foods and drugs in 2007, a significant increase from recent years. The alerts came in a year marked by the largest pet-food recall-caused by contaminated Chinese ingredients-and multiple discoveries of potentially dangerous products for humans, according to USA Today.

Houston-based foodservice distributor SYSCO Corp. has awarded Randall Manufacturing, Chicago, its Overall 2007 Supplier of the Year Award for the Warehouse and Transportation divisions. This is the fifth year in a row that Randall has been recognized.

Mother Parkers has implemented a scheduling solution at its Fort Worth, TX, manufacturing facility. The software, from Wilmington, DE-based Supply Chain Consultants, will help the Canadian coffee and tea manufacturer improve schedule attainment and customer service and reduce overtime. Mother Parkers is using the solution at its facility in Mississauga, Ontario.

Associated Food Stores, Salt Lake City, is implementing software from JDA Software Group Inc., Scottsdale, AZ, to decrease inventory levels, improve turns and service levels and enhance planner productivity. AFS says it is using JDA's advanced warehouse replenishment solution to help maintain its position as a market leader.

Pittsburgh-based supermarket retailer Giant Eagle Inc. has implemented an assortment planning and space optimization solution from Galleria Retail Technology Solutions, Chicago. The solution will help Giant Eagle deliver customer centric assortments through automated planograms throughout its entire enterprise.
