Intermodal Rail Traffic Has A Great Week

Rail intermodal traffic increased 10.6 percent across the U.S. for the week ending on March 22, according to the Association of American Railroads.

U.S. rail intermodal traffic increased 10.6 percent in the week ended March 22 compared with the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads reported. For the first 12 weeks of the year, intermodal volume has increased 2.4 percent from the same period last year to 2,937,811 units.

Railroads moved 260,713 intermodal trailers and containers that week, AAR said March 27 in its weekly report.

Rail carload volume, which excludes intermodal units, increased 4.5 percent year-over-year to 291,525 carloads.

Nine of the 10 commodity groups AAR tracks increased over last year, led by grain (16 percent). The only commodity decrease was chemicals (0.2%).

Year-to-date, intermodal volume for all of North America increased 2.4 percent to 3.6 million trailers and containers.
