Stellar Completes Construction Of United States Cold Storage Facility

Jacksonville, FL: Stellar has constructed a facility in Lake City, FL, for United States Cold Storage Inc. (USCS).

The 191,000-square-foot cold storage facility features a more environmentally sound CO2-based refrigeration system, designed to maximize energy efficiency and minimize environmental impacts. Stellar provided all engineering, architecture, construction, thermal and refrigeration installation for the project.

Located in a key strategic position to serve the southeastern states and near Interstates 10 and 75, the Lake City facility encompasses 5.2 million cubic feet and houses 18,000 variable-height racked pallet positions at temperatures ranging from -20°F to +55°F.

It includes a freezer, two convertible rooms and 18 truck dock doors. The facility also features extra-wide (60-foot) temperature-controlled loading docks for high-volume distribution flow-through. The docks facilitate cross docking, trans-loading and pre-staging of product and feature the latest in site and facility layout to enable high-security operations.

“We have worked with United States Cold Storage for more than 20 years, designing and building state-of-the-art facilities across the country,” says Mike Netting, Stellar divisional vice president of Distribution Facility Services.

“This facility is another example of Stellar’s and USCS’s dedication to building safe, sustainable and efficient facilities.”

The facility’s CO2-based refrigeration system utilizes a cascade refrigeration technology that improves operating efficiency and reduces environmental impacts. The system builds on current food safety and emissions standards by better utilizing energy and further minimizing contamination risk.

The facility also contains administration offices, locker rooms, break rooms, a machine room, an electrical room, a battery-charging area and a maintenance room. Building materials consist of a structural steel frame, insulated metal wall panels, a single-ply membrane roofing system and tilt-up concrete wall panels for the dock.
