Montreal, ONT: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has honored Farmington, CT-based Carrier Corp. with its coveted Best-of-the-Best Stratospheric Ozone Protection award in recognition of the company’s achievements in helping restore the Earth’s protective ozone layer. Carrier is the parent company of Carrier Transicold, which provides industry-leading transport temperature control and anti-idling solutions for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers.
“We are truly honored that EPA recognized Carrier’s environmental leadership with such a prestigious award,” notes John Mandyck, Carrier’s vice president of government and international relations, who accepted the award during ceremonies in Montreal.
The awards presentation coincided with the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Montreal Protocol, which calls for a global elimination of ozone depleting substances such as chlorofluorcarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) used in air-conditioning and refrigeration products.
“Environmental leading companies like Carrier demonstrate that global environmental protection can go hand-in-hand with economic growth,” says Bob Meyers, principal deputy assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation.
Geraud Darnis, president of Carrier Corp., says, “Carrier has been an industry leader in environmental stewardship for decades. This award is yet another testament to our ability to be an environmental champion.”
In 1994, Carrier became the first company in the industry to phase-out CFCs from air-conditioning systems worldwide—two years ahead of requirements in the U.S. and 16 years ahead of mandates in developing countries.
Carrier Transicold’s environmental innovations for the trucking segment include Deltek hybrid diesel-electric refrigeration technology, which has a sealed refrigeration circuit that requires only half the refrigerant of conventional equipment, and the ComfortPro APU, which dramatically reduces diesel emissions from idling vehicles. For the shipping industry, Carrier’s container refrigeration products all use non ozone-depleting R-134a.
EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson said, “By embracing cooperation over confrontation, EPA and our vital partners like Carrier are continuing to create a better tomorrow by protecting the Earth's atmosphere today. We at EPA join the global community in celebrating the anniversary of the Montreal Protocol – a shining example of how human ingenuity, leadership and determination can create a healthier, better world.”
