Central Islip, NY: C&S Wholesale Grocers will soon close a warehouse on Long Island that currently supplies A&P stores in New York.
In 2005, C&S, the Keene, NH-based company, took over warehousing and distribution functions for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., which owns Waldbaum's and A&P stores. A&P recently merged with Pathmark.
The stores will instead be supplied from warehouses located in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
Kevin McCaffrey the president of Teamsters Local 707, says that about 390 workers will be affected. According to Long Island Newsday, McCaffrey said C&S officials notified workers and the union last week of the plan to close the Central Islip warehouse, saying it would save the company some $7 million annually.
