Kirkland, WA: The Kenworth Clean Power Technology Tour recently completed its five month, 24,000 mile journey to 75 Kenworth dealerships across America to show customers its new no-idle system and other technologies.
“The Kenworth Clean Power tour was very successful as we were able to bring the no-idle message directly to many fleets and owner-operators,” says Gary Moore, Kenworth assistant general manager for marketing and sales. “Kenworth Clean Power is a key environmental solution as California soon implements – and other states consider – five minute idling regulations that will apply even to sleeper trucks parked for rest during off-hours.”
After piloting the Kenworth T660 equipped with Kenworth Clean Power for nearly 15,000 miles of the tour, driver Mike McDowell is one of the most experienced users of the new no-idle system.
“Kenworth Clean Power worked great, even keeping me cool at 72 degrees for 10 hours in hot weather of 95 to 100 degrees,” notes McDowell, who began driving trucks in 1979 and works for Spiff Services, which provided transportation services for the Kenworth tour. “It’s also a very quiet system, which helps you to get a good night’s sleep. Just set the controls where you want it and let it go.”
McDowell also enjoyed operating the new, aerodynamic Kenworth T660. “The T660 is a wonderful truck to drive. I drove it in all kinds of weather conditions during the tour and it’s a smooth-riding truck with fantastic handling. I like the aerodynamic body style which really pushes through the air. I couldn’t ask for a better driving truck.” In addition to the comfort provided by Kenworth Clean Power, McDowell said he liked the quiet cab, driver-friendly dash, interior LED lighting and the state-of-the-art headlamps.
Kenworth Clean Power is available as a factory-installed option for the aerodynamic Kenworth T660 with 72-inch AeroCab sleeper. The system uses dedicated, advanced deep-cycle batteries that power a thermal storage cooler with 21,000 BTUs of cooling capacity. Once the truck is shut off, a thermostat regulates the desired temperature and a variable speed fan circulates chilled air through a duct located near the bunk. Extensive testing has shown that when the outside temperature is as high as 95 degrees, Kenworth Clean Power is able to keep the sleeper cool and provide accessory power for up to 10 hours.
