Smithfield Foods, Smithfield, VA, has joined the Chicago Climate Exchange Inc. (CCX), a voluntary greenhouse gas emissions reduction program and has committed to cut its greenhouse gas emissions in the United States by a minimum of 6 percent by the year 2010.

Jel Sert Co., Chicago, is using LeanLogistics On-Demand TMS, a solution that improves visibility, reduces transportation costs, increases logistics efficiencies and raises service levels. LeanLogistics is based in Holland, MI.

Intermodal volume, fueled by continued import growth, rose 0.6 percent in the fourth quarter, wrapping up the fifth consecutive year of traffic, according to the Intermodal Association of North America, Calverton, MD. The fourth-quarter results included a 4.3 percent increase in international traffic.

Oregon supermarket retailer C&K Markets is implementing price optimization software at all of its 59 locations, including Ray's Food Place, Shop Smart and Price Less Foods stores. The company is using Revionics Inc.'s Advanced Pricing System (RAPS). Revionics is based in Granite Bay, CA.

Save Mart Supermarkets, Modesto, CA, has acquired Albertson's LLC Northern California division. The sale includes 130 Albertson's stores in northern California and northern Nevada, the Roseville, CA and Vacaville, CA distribution centers, and the division office in Dublin, CA.

Private label food and beverage sales are soaring, according to a report from Packaged Facts, New York. The report estimates 2006 sales at more than $48 billion and projects that sales will top $56 billion by 2011. Dairy and grain foods lead the pack, as does store-brand bottled water and energy drinks in the beverage category.

Austin, TX-based Whole Food Markets Inc. and Wild Oats Markets, Boulder, CO, have signed a merger agreement under which Whole Foods Market will acquire Wild Oats Markets' outstanding common stock in a cash tender offer of $18.50 per share, or approximately $565 million.

RedPrairie Corp., Milwaukee, has acquired GEOCOMtms Inc., Quebec City. The combined companies, operating under the name RedPrairie, will integrate and support all products and services from organizations within RedPrairie's end-to-end (E2e) suite and will meet the fleet requirements of food, grocery and retail companies.
