FDA Launches Online Portal For Public To Report On Livestock Feed Issues

The agency's new reporting tool will track complaints regarding livestock feed and offer information about sickened animals online.

Late last week the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the availability of an online portal for the public to report problems related to livestock and animal feed. The Livestock Food Reporting portal will accept reports about foods made for species considered to be livestock, including but not limited to, horses, cattle, swine, poultry and fish, the agency said.

Anyone with concerns about animal feed may file a report, including veterinarians and livestock producers.

The new online portal also provides an additional means for consumers to register complaints, although the FDA's District Office consumer complaint coordinators will continue to accept reports via phone according to the agency.

The Livestock Food Reporting portal is part of the larger online system that FDA says is designed to improve the process of reporting product safety issues to the FDA and the National Institutes of Health.

Manufacturers, distributors, retailers and public health officials at the federal, state and local level should continue to use the Reportable Food section of the Safety Reporting Portal, FDA said.
