Thanks in part to an aggressive campaign by the Carton Council, an organization of carton manufacturers across the country, recycling of paper-based milk and juice cartons have increased nearly 160 percent in the past four years, up to 48 percent of U.S. households in 2013.
The Council credits their collaboration with both private and public entities for its success, stressing that in most instances the increase stems from its grass-roots efforts at schools and with children. They also credit the increase of green-minded consumers and the packaging industry goals on sustainability with pushing the effort forward, as more and more communities, schools and businesses continue to increase their sustainable goals and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
In a survey conducted by the Carton Council, over 86 percent of the respondents said they expect food and beverage companies to encourage the increase in recycling of their packages. The same survey also showed that 51 percent of the respondents said the ability to recycle a product's package, with visible logos or labeling that says it's recyclable, would "impact" their purchasing decisions.
