Congratulations to the Top 100 3PLs, our annual listing of the leading third-party logistics and cold storage providers to the food industry. Now in its sixth year, the list has grown to 100 companies—by adding a number of cold storage providers to the mix. These companies are helping food and beverage manufacturers and distributors reduce costs, increase flexibility and improve service levels in their warehousing and transportation operations.
In “Follow the Leaders” [page 29], we highlight the types of services the Top 100 3PLs offer to better manage your supply chain. Our editorial team selected these companies based on the information they supplied on their submission forms, as well as through research and industry expert and reader input. All 3PLs provided a confidential food customer reference list, which helped us in the evaluation process.

And if you’re working with a 3PL that’s not on the list—and should be—let us know. We’re always looking for qualified companies to make our list as complete as possible.
Looking for other ways to reduce costs and increase supply chain efficiency? Maybe intermodal transportation is the way to go. The total number of trailers and containers shipped via intermodal rail has increased by nearly 33 percent over the past 10 years, which has spurred service providers to invest in rail infrastructure and associated technology. Rail cars have been re-designed, refrigerated and enlarged for the handling of bigger loads—especially those of fresh fruit, vegetables and other perishable products.
