The Charles C. Parks Co., Gallatin, TN, will upgrade the supply chain technology in its Gallatin, TN warehouse with solutions from Plano, TX-based Retalix, including the Retalix Power Warehouse, Retalix Power Voice and Retalix Power Productivity software solutions. Using barcode scanning and wireless radio frequency (RF) technologies, the software automates numerous warehouse operations, including receiving and returns.

C&S Wholesale Grocers, Keene, NH, will soon close a warehouse on Long Island that is supplying A&P stores in New York. The move is designed to save the company an estimated $7 million annually in warehousing costs. The stores will instead be supplied from a number of warehouses located in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

ConAgra Foods, Omaha, NE, has selected San Carlos, CA-based DemandTec's Promotion software-as-a-service application to facilitate more effective promotional strategies. Using the DemandTec solution, ConAgra Foods expects to gain greater visibility into promotion effectiveness for their brands, categories and customers and to foster collaborative business planning efforts with key retail partners.

Dole Fresh Vegetables Co. has converted all of its harvesting equipment at its Salinas, CA, and its Yuma, AZ, facilities to B20 bio-diesel fuel, a domestic renewable fuel for diesel engines derived from natural oils. The company has been testing B20 bio-diesel in farm equipment and off-road vehicles since this past August.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the development of its Quality Monitoring Program, a service that will allow produce companies to submit processed produce samples to the USDA's graders for impartial review. After inspection, products that do not conform to a supplier's assigned specifications will be reported back to the company.

Jacksonville, FL-based Winn-Dixie supermarkets is selling the two dairies it operates-one in Plant City, FL and the other in Hammond, LA-to Southeast Milk Inc., a Belleview, FL-based milk cooperative. Once the sale is complete, Winn-Dixie's only remaining manufacturing operation will be the Chek Cola plant in Fitzgerald. GA. The sale is part of an effort by Winn-Dixie to focus on the retail operation of its business.

The Army & Air Force Exchange Service is embarking on a variety of energy-saving initiatives to reduce its impact on the environment. To begin, it is replacing 10 percent of its beverage vending machines with energy efficient ENERGY STAR models in many of its 3,100 worldwide facilities.

CHEP USA, Miami, has presented a $10,000 check to The National Watermelon Association, Plant City, FL, to help fund research, lobbying and consumer promotion activities at the association. It is the result of a partnership between the two organizations that provides financial support for NWA as more members use CHEP pallets.

Penske Logistics, Reading, PA, has opened an intermodal and multi-client distribution center in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The 100,000 square-foot, 14 door cross-dock facility is located along a major rail line and can deliver truck-to-rail or rail-to-truck product shipments....Branded and private label rice maker Riviana Foods, Houston, has broken ground on its state-of-the-art rice processing/packaging planet and warehouse in Memphis. The 400,000 square-foot facility, located on 31 acres, will be completed in 2010....Preferred Freezer Services, Newark, NJ, has opened a facility in Jacksonville, FL that features 8.7 million cubic feet of freezer space and 910,000 cubic feet of cooler space. The facility also has 23 dock doors with levelers and seals.

IFDA Honors Gordon Food Service's Dan Gordon For Leadership

The International Foodservice Distributors Association (IFDA), Falls Church, VA, presented the association's Cornerstone Award to Daniel Gordon, president and CEO of Gordon Food Service, Grand Rapids, MI, at the 2008 IFDA Partners Executive Forum. The Cornerstone Award is presented annually to a leader who has shown outstanding industry leadership, support and service and has played an integral role in leading IFDA.

"Dan is a true leader who has been generous with his time and counsel and has provided leadership on legislative and regulatory priorities," says Mark S. Allen, president and CEO of IFDA.

Gordon has been a member of the IFDA Board of Directors for the past 12 years and previously served on the IFDA Executive Committee and as the association's chairman from 2002 to 2004.
