Tyson Foods Inc., Springdale, AK, is planning to buy 60 percent of Chinese poultry processor Xinchang Group, Shandong, China. In conjunction, Tyson is building a plant outside Shanghai to process and package chicken meat from 40 million chickens a year. The plant will allow Xinchang to double its capacity to 125 million chickens a year.

Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis, is poised to accept a takeover offer from Belgium-based InBev, which is paying $70 a share to create the world's largest brewer. The combined company will be called Anheuser-Busch InBev. Anheuser-Busch is currently the leading domestic brewer and holds an estimated 48.5 percent share of all U.S. beer sales.

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (A&P), Montvale, NJ, says it's "the largest buyer of locally grown produce in the northeastern U.S." A&P says it has established a number of business relationships with farmers in New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland, which will allow its Waldbaum's and Pathmark stores to market fresh tomatoes, peppers, corn, squash, lettuce, cauliflower and cucumbers that are locally grown.

J.M. Smucker Co., Orrville, OH, is purchasing the Folgers coffee business from The Procter & Gamble Co., Cincinnati. The $3 billion tax-free stock deal will give P&G shareholders a 53.5 percent stake in Smucker. Smucker says it will continue to operate the Folgers manufacturing plants and distribution facility, which is located in New Orleans.

Premium Waters, Minneapolis, has installed an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) and warehouse management system (WMS) from Westfalia Technologies Inc., York, PA, in their Douglas, GA plant. The AS/RS includes two storage/retrieval machines operating in one aisle, each capable of handling two pallets at a time. The installation also includes a four level rack system that holds 6,500 pallet positions in a multiple deep storage design.

Sadia, one of Brazil's largest pork and poultry processors, has implement the topVOX voice solution at several distribution centers in Brazil. Sadia chose the solution because it integrates directly with Sadia's SAP warehouse management system. topVox is based in Barrington, IL.

Gatorade, Chicago, plans to install a large rooftop solar array at its distribution warehouse in Tolleson, AZ. The array, which is the largest in the state, is a 500-kilowatt system and will supply 40 percent of the company's annual energy needs, enough to power 50 Arizona houses a year. Some 2,500 rooftop solar panels will be installed in September and the system will become active this November.

Twenty-five meat processing plants belonging to Cargill Meat Solutions, Wichita, KS, have achieved ISO 4001 Environmental Classification. The plants process beef, turkey, pork and case-ready meat products and are involved in such environmental efforts as recovering methane from wastewater and energy efficiency improvement projects.

KX Logistics, owned by Rich Products Corp., Buffalo, NY, has opened a 600,000-square-foot refrigerated/frozen food warehouse in Beijing, China. The warehouse holds 12,000 tons of food and boasts temperatures as low as -28 degrees celsius....

Bay Valley Foods, Horsham, PA, is building a 600,000-square-foot facility in Rochelle, IL. The facility will be used as a warehouse-distribution center, as well as for packaging and labeling canned soup goods.

England Honored As IRTA Executive Of The Year

Dan England (pictured), Chairman of the Board of C.R. England Inc., a leading trucking company in the U.S., was honored as the International Refrigerated Transportation Association (IRTA) Executive of the Year at the 2008 IARW-WFLO-IRTA Annual Convention and Expo.

The award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution by fostering innovation, looking beyond the boundaries of his company, resolving industry issues and improving the industry's image and efficiency.

England is a past chairman of the Truckload Carriers Association.
