» Supermarket Internacionales H-E-B, S.A. de C.V., a wholly-owned subsidiary of H-E-B Grocery Co., is deploying DemandTec’s Everyday Price Optimization software service. The company says the move to use the solution at H-E-B Mexico was a natural progression to leverage the price optimization and consumer demand modeling capabilities that have provided significant insights into the buying behavior of H-E-B’s customers in the U.S.

» Save Mart Supermarkets, Modesto, CA, is using a suite of Retalix supply chain management applications to enhance business processes at its headquarters, as well as its distribution centers. To date, Save Mart has deployed Retalix purchasing, order management, invoicing and invoice reconciliation in Modesto, as well as the Retalix RF- and voice-enabled warehouse management system (WMS) in its Roseville, CA, facility.

» Nestle, Glendale, CA, is using more than 200 PosiCharge fast charge systems at 14 facilities throughout North America. The system, from AeroVironment Inc., charges lift truck batteries during short breaks, at lunch time and between shifts—so the battery never leaves the vehicle. The system eliminates battery changing rooms.

» Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Bentonville, AR, has selected the Agentrics product lifecyle management (PLM) platform to support the collaborative development of its private brand products, beginning with the Wal-Mart Great Value line. The solution helps retailers and manufacturers gain more control, speed and accuracy throughout the product development lifecycle. So far, more than 500 of Wal-Mart’s suppliers are using the solution.

» Cabot Creamery Cooperative’s 60,000-square-foot distribution center in Montpelier, VT, has gone live with RedPrairie Corp.’s WMS. The solution is running in Cabot’s distribution center and two production sites, helping to track and trace product from the point that it is manufactured to when it is shipped from the wareshouse.

» Food Industry Executives Form ‘Bulk Is Green’ Council
Food executives have formed the Bulk Is Green Council, a Little Rock, AR-based organization to help consumers, food manufacturers and grocers learn about the environmental and economic benefits of bulk foods and lessen the carbon footprint through reduced packaging.

The food price index of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations revealed that food cost was 28 percent higher in October 2008 than in October 2006—and the USDA is predicting an additional 4 percent increase in 2009. Bulk foods are sold without a printed package, and packaging is estimated by the USDA to contribute at least 8 percent to the retail cost of food.

Today, almost any food can be delivered from its source to the consumer in bulk form and historically, are priced lower than their packaged counterparts, often as much as 50 percent.

Further, bulk foods require less transportation to deliver. They do not require packaging components that must be produced and transported prior to being filled, and bulk food can be packed more densely to yield more efficient transport.

Forming the Bulk Is Green Council are Scott Johnson of Trade Fixtures, Clint Landis of Frontier Natural Products Co-op, Sarah Galusha of the Hain Celestial Group, Morty Cohen of SunRidge Farms and Aaron Anker of GrandyOats. Stellar, Jacksonville, FL, is constructing United States Cold Storage’s 202,000-square-foot distribution center in Turlock, CA. Stellar provided site selection and design services for the project and will handle construction management, refrigeration, thermal and roofing services....Stellar is also building Southern Cold Storage’s distribution facility in Gadsden, AL. The 70,000-square-foot facility is due to be completed in August. In addition, Stellar is building the Keystone Foods facility, which will produce fully cooked chicken for foodservice customers. Once both buildings are complete, final packaged products from Keystone Foods’ plant will be shipped via a connecting corridor on a pallet conveyor to the Southern Cold Storage facility. Products will stored in the facility’s freezer at minus 10 degrees.
